Consumer credit is a type of loan that concerns transactions other than those relating to real estate. It responds more particularly to a cash flow need of a borrower wishing to finance the purchase of consumer goods.
It is therefore not necessarily an assigned credit, that is to say a credit which is triggered upon the purchase of a product and the presentation of its invoice (as for the auto credit when purchasing a car). For information, the consumer credit can be used in many circumstances.
A consumer loan is granted by a specialized credit institution or a bank to the extent that the borrower is able to meet their monthly payments and therefore repay it.

Apart from the assigned credit, which requires the borrower to justify the use of his loan, there are many other forms of consumer credit. The most widespread in addition to the assigned loan are the personal loan and the revolving credit, also called revolving credit, reconstitutable credit or permanent credit.
In both cases, the borrower is free to use the amount of his loan as he sees fit, depending on his project(s) (renewal of furniture or household appliances, purchase of a new vehicle – car, motorbike, etc. –, financing of improvement or development work on the home, etc.).
The borrower must have all the information allowing him to know if the credit is adapted to his financial situation as well as to his needs. The contract offers proposed by banking establishments and financial organizations must indicate in particular:
- The total amount due.
- The interest rate.
- The monthly payments.
- The conditions for making the borrowed amount available.
- The cost of any borrower insurance.
- The duration of the contract.
- The validity period of the offer.
- The minimum period for reflection.
- The withdrawal period (14 calendar days).
